Sheep
SHEEP & BEEF, POWYS: Anna farms alongside her Dad John on 370 acres (150 hectares) in Mid Wales. It’s a family-run, upland sheep and beef farm with 800 Welsh Mule ewes, 45 cows (Hereford/Friesian crosses and Limousins) and a Charolais bull. They also have a small flock of pedigree Charollais rams, or tups, which are sold as commercial breeding stock.
The farm has been supplying lamb to Waitrose for more than 25 years. All the lambs go straight to the abattoir from the farm.
Anna has worked with horses longer than she's been farming sheep. She loves riding and competes in one day events.
Talking Point
Anna works her dog Jill on the farm every day and they have competed in sheepdog trials together.
Farm diversification
Anna runs a small livery yard. There are seven stables in an enclosed, American style barn, an all weather arena, a turn out pen and all year grazing. She grazes the horse paddocks with sheep and the muck from the stables is used throughout the farm on the fields.
